Sir Williams EPK DVD
Between 2007 and 2009 I produced an EPK (Electronic Press Kit) DVD for the German cover band Sir Williams for my final visual exam at the Institute for Music and Media, Duesseldorf. Watch the trailer to the DVD above to get an impression of the scope of the project. Responsiblities besides producing involved project supervision, video editing, interview audio mixing and dvd authoring.
Andy Gillmann Top 10 Grooves and Beats
This trailer shows excerpts of Andy Gillmann’s new drum tutoring DVD Top 10 Grooves and Beats which was directed by my colleague Andrew Mottl. The DVD features multi-camera/multi-angle video with stereo audio in both German and English (dubbed) and was produced at the Institute for Music and Media in Duesseldorf. I was responsible for the audio departement, engaging in all stages of the production and doing the studio recording, drum mixing and the final DVD mix in both languages. The dubbing session was engineered by Andrew Mottl himself. The DVD has been published by the Leu Verlag.

I produced, recorded and mixed four tracks in Stereo and 5.1 multichannel with German drummer Andy Gillmann and his trio for a demo CD in 2008. The recording and mix sessions were executed at Studio 2 of the Institute for Music and Media in Duesseldorf, Germany. The surround mix of this particular song “Red Baron” won the second prize in the “non-classical surround” category of the recording competition at the 125th AES Convention in San Francisco. A stereo mix of another track was awarded with the third prize in the “jazz/blues” category. The production was sponsored by the German distributor for DPA Microphones, Mega Audio. Assistant engineer was Andrew Mottl and the mastering was provided by Alex Kloss at Time Tools Mastering.

In 2007 I produced, engineered and mixed the 12-track album clearing my head by the singer/songwriter Steven Merson. The total production time was 8 months, assistant engineering by Andrew Mottl, mastering by Alex Kloss. The production was a part of my final exam in audio engineering and took place at the Institute for Music and Media. The songs were recorded and mixed either on a SSL G4000+ console or on the Salzbrenner Stagetec Nexus/Aurus-System. Producing Steven Merson involved high-class recording situations and a huge effort hat to be put in. Besides drums, vocals, acoustic & electric guitars the production also featured small strings and brass ensembles, Hammond b3, Fender Rhodes piano and a traditional side drum provided by the Rhine Area Pipes and Drums, Duesseldorf.

As part of a college music arrangement class the classic song Yesterday by the Beatles had to be rearranged and produced. I decided to turn the song completely inside out pointing out the dark and melancholic side of it that I felt already exists in the original track on a subliminal level. The song was reharmonized and rearranged to fit in the TripHop/electronica genre and features both live and programmed drums, original Fender Rhodes, different synths and resampling techniques and an overall creative and experimenting approach. The vocals were sung by Corinna Simon and the final track recieved an A+ in the exam. The track was mixed on the SSL G4000+ console, the editing and recording was done with Steinberg Nuendo and Ableton Live.

In 2006 I participated in a recording project as part of a college class. I was the session engineer and operated the SSL desk while recording “The sidewinder” played by the fusion quintet consisting of piano, drum set, bass, jazz guitar and trombone. I also mixed the track in the mixing suite no. 1 at the Institute for Music and Media.
