Welcome to soundphile - home of the audio engineer/mixer/producer Julian David. This site showcases my work in the field of recording, producing and mixing audio, as well as other audio engineering related projects.
I engineered a recording session with German drummer Andy Gillmann and his band at the renowned Haushaus Studios in Bonn, Germany. The six-piece band consisting of drums, upright bass, piano, guitar, tenor sax and trumpet/flugelhorn was recorded in Studio A of the facility utilizing the studio’s fantastic collection of microphones. Supplementary ribbon microphones by AEA were used to craft a natural sound. The purpose of the recording session was to produce jazz playalongs for Gillmann’s upcoming drum teaching book.
On December 22nd, I’ll be engineering a demo recording session for the tramp & hobo band The Grand Industrial Band from Cologne, Germany. This is going to be a live recording at a local club and I’ll be using a large number of AEA ribbon microphones to create a vintage soundscape.
As part of my final visual exam for my engineering studies at the Institute for Music and Media in Duesseldorf, Germany, I produced a EPK (Electronic Press Kit) DVD for the German cover band Sir Williams. The project was finally completed in April 2009 after about 1 1/2 years of work. Watch the trailer to the DVD below to get an impression of the scope of the project. Responsiblities of mine besides producing involved project supervision, video editing, interview audio mixing and dvd authoring. Big thanks to everyone who was involved for making this project possible.
Make sure to drop by booth #342 in the Javits Center October 9-12 to catch a glimpse of the A840 and check out the RPQ. I will help Audio Engineering Associates (AEA) to present the new A840 active ribbon microphone at the 127th AES Convention in New York City. This mic will be a perfect match to be used with the RPQ curve shaper preamp.
I will assist German dealer Morphon Audio at the HI-END GEAR Conference in Hamburg on September 18th- 19th, officially representing Audio Engineering Associates. Besides gettting to know more about the most popular ribbon microphones and preamps, visitors will also get an early glimpse at AEA’s new hot product: The A840 active ribbon microphone. Although the product will be officially announced at the 127th AES Convention in NYC in October 2009, a pre-production prototype will be showcased in Hamburg.
The recording of the last show of alto-saxophonist Bud Shank, who sadly passed away in April 2009, and his quartet with Bill Mays on piano, Bob Magnusson on bass and Joe LaBarbera on drums will soon be released on the Jazzed Media label. Paul Pegas, Yasuhiro Takeushi and I (as assistant engineer) recorded the show at the Jazz Bakery in Culver City, LA in January 2009. An early review was published on the Audiophile Audition website.
I’m currently working on my master thesis (Diplomarbeit) titled Analysis of ribbon microphone output transformers and their influence on the microphone’s sound. The thesis is consulted by Prof. Dieter Leckschat at the University of Applied Sciences in Duesseldorf, Germany. I would like to thank the following companies for their generous support:
Audio Engineering Associates (AEA) will be exhibiting at the 126. AES Convention in Munich on May 7-10. Visit us at booth 2107 to learn more about AEA’s studio ribbon microphones and preamps. Make sure to stop by and grab our free AEA Exemplar DVD. Contact Wes Dooley (mail to stereoms@aol.com) or me if you’d like to setup an appointment for a meeting.
My recording and mix of the Larry Goldings Trio, which I recorded with Paul Pegas and Yasuhiro Takeushi at the Jazz Bakery in Los Angeles, was chosen to enter the recording competition at the upcoming 126. AES Convention in Munich. The track convinced the jury of my school’s preliminiary competition, consisting of Prof. Werner Roth and engineer/studio owner Georg Niehusmann.
I will assist Wes Dooley and his company AEA (Audio Engineering Associates) at the Musikmesse/ProLight& Sound in Frankfurt from April 1-4. We will promote AEA’s line of big ribbon mics and electronics and try get some leads to dealers and potential customers. If you’re interested in AEA products and plan to attend the show, please send a note to me or Wes Dooley (StereoMS@aol.com).
