2010:

  • Recording Engineer: The Spyderz
    I recorded massive guitar tracks with Spyderz guitarist Khrys Maxwell for their upcoming album at Underground Sound Studios.
  • Recording Engineer: Trenchtown
    I was responsible for recording guitars and vocals for the song “Unpaid Holiday” at Underground Sound Studios. Again, Timothy Waite helped out setting up the session. I also played and recorded some additional percussion tracks for the song. The record was mastered by Greg Calbi at Sterling Sound, NYC.
  • Recording Engineer & Mixer: Last Day Off
    I recorded and mixed a 4-song acoustic EP with the guys at Underground Sound Studios. In addition, I played some percussion parts myself on the record. The session was assisted by Timothy Waite.
  • Assistant Engineer: Trenchtown (stereo)
    In March 2010, I worked as assistant engineer with the LA local band Trenchtown at Billy Graziadei’s Underground Sound Studios, Los Angeles.
  • Mixer: Max Steel (Mattel Inc.)
    I was kindly asked to do preview mixes for composer David Raiklen in February 2010. He composed the theatrical music for the Max Steel series by Mattel Inc.

2009:

  • Recording Engineer & Mixer: Andy Gillmann & Friends (stereo)
    I engineered a recording session with German drummer Andy Gillmann and his band at the renowned Haushaus Studios in Bonn, Germany. The six-piece band consisting of drums, upright bass (Ralf Cetto), piano (Robert Kesternich), guitar (Bert Fastenrath), tenor sax (Chancy Gärtner) and trumpet/flugelhorn (Martin Zobel) was recorded in Studio A of the facility utilizing the studio’s fantastic collection of microphones. Supplementary ribbon microphones by AEA were used to craft a natural sound. The purpose of the recording session was to produce jazz playalongs for Gillmann’s upcoming drum teaching book+DVD “JazzTraining”, which is due to be released in August 2010.
  • Recording Engineer & Mixer: Grand Industrial Band (stereo)
    In December ’09, I engineered a demo recording session for the tramp & hobo band The Grand Industrial Band from Cologne, Germany. It was a live recording at a local club and I used a large number of AEA ribbon microphones to create a vintage soundscape.
  • Assistant engineer: Bud Shank Quartet (stereo)
    Paul Pegas, Yasuhiro Takeushi and I recorded the last shows of alto-saxophonist Bud Shank (who sadly passed away in April 2009) and his quartet at the Jazz Bakery in Culver City, LA. The CD called Fascinating Rhythms was released on the Jazzed Media Label in the second half of 2009. Click here for a review of the CD or listen to it on iTunes.
  • Assistant engineer: Pacific Symphony on KUSC (stereo)
    I assisted Ted Ancona in a live broadcast of the Pacific Symphony Orchestra for the KUSC radio. The concert took place at the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall in Orange County and featured pianist Freddy Kempf (with Liszt’s Piano Concerto No.1) and guest conductor Carlos Kalmar. The performance also included Mozart’s Symphony No. 38 “Prague”, Janacek’s Taras Bulba and Enescu’s Romanian Rhapsody No.1.
  • Producer: AEA Exemplar 2.0 (stereo & 5.1)
    I produced an educational/promotional DVD for Audio Engineering Associates, a U.S.-based company for ribbon microphones, preamps and accessories, founded by Wes Dooley. Twelve select projects (by Universal Audio, AIX Records, Mercenary Audio and others) demonstrate AEA’s products in a variety of applications.

2008:

  • Assistant engineer: Stephen Tharp organ recording (stereo)
    I assisted Ron Streicher in recording the organ at St. Edmunds church in San Marino. The program consisted of pieces by Mendelssohn, Bach, Liszt and Dupré, previously played by Stephen Tharp and reproduced by the organ’s playback system.
  • Assistant engineer: Ed Neumeister Jazz Orchestra (stereo)
    I assisted Paul Pegas in recording this big band show at the Jazz Bakery in Los Angeles. Once again, mostly AEA ribbon microphones and preamps were used.
  • Recording engineer: Magic Time (stereo)
    I recorded a two-hour radio drama (directed by Marc Scott Zicree) at the Chaplin Theatre of the Raleigh Studios in Hollywood, LA. All actors and live foley artists were recorded with AEA ribbon microphones to Pro Tools. I also took care of the sound reinforcement for the live audience.
  • Recording engineer: UCLA Bruins Band (stereo)
    Me, Paul Pegas and Wes Dooley recorded the UCLA Bruins marching band in two sessions. The recording was done outdoors on one of the UCLA fields. A Decca Tree with Schoeps MK2Hs and a separate pair of AEA R84 were used to record multitracks to Pro Tools at 88.2 kHz sampling rate.
  • Recording assistant: The Los Angeles Clarinet Choir (stereo)
    Ron Streicher recorded the Clarinet Choir conducted by Margaret Thornhill at “La Cresecenta Presbyterian Church” and I had the pleasure to help him with it. Assistant engineer was Gaylord Hammerwold. The session was recorded straight to 2-track using Pro Tools and CD-Rs.
  • Assistant engineer: Influence Big Band (stereo)
    I assisted Paul Pegas in recording Ron Jones’ Influence Big Band live at the Jazz Bakery in Los Angeles on November, 10th. We recorded the concert using a large number of AEA R84 ribbon microphones and AEA preamps including two prototype units of the new RPQ. The multitrack was recorded with an Alesis HD24 recorder at 44.1 kHz/24 bit and a stereo 2-track mix went to Nuendo 3.
  • Recording engineer: Larry Goldings Trio (stereo)
    In a team with my colleagues Paul Pegas and Yasuhiro Takeuchi I recorded four nights of the Larry Goldings Trio at the Jazz Bakery in Los Angeles. The trio consisting of Larry Goldings (organ), Bill Stewart (drums) and Peter Goldstein (guitar) was recorded at 48k/24bit to an Alesis HD24 recorder. The recording was done with an exclusive collection of AEA R84, R88 and R92 ribbon microphones using AEA TRP and RPQ preamps that were sponsored by Audio Engineering Associates, Pasadena.
  • Assistant engineer: Graham Blyth’s organ recital (stereo)
    I had the pleasure to assist Ron Streicher with his recording of Graham Blyth’s organ recital at St. Mary’s Cathedral on October, 4th as a special event of the 125th AES Convention in San Francisco. The recital of the excellent organist was recorded straight to 2-track with a small Pro Tools rig. Graham played a fine selection of pieces from Bach, Franck, Messiaen and Vierne.
  • Producer & engineer: Andy Gillmann Trio (5.1 & stereo)
    I produced and recorded four songs played by the Andy Gillmann Trio (with Ralf Cetto on bass and Robert Kesternich on piano) in Studio 1 of the Institute for Music and Media, Düsseldorf. German distributor of DPA microphones, Mega Audio, kindly supported the production with a pair of microphones. Andrew Mottl once again assisted the session.
  • Recording & mixing engineer: Reise zum Horizont (stereo)
    Recording and mixing for the music soundtrack of the motion picture documentary “Reise zum Horizont”. The soundtrack is produced by Nick and Clemens Prokop from trustyourears and can be purchased at musicload.de as mp3 files.
  • Mastering engineer: Anna Kubin Demos (stereo)
    I’ve done some mastering work for my colleague Jörg who produced and recorded three songs with the local singer Anna Kubin. The mastering was done “in the box” with Nuendo using PSP, Waves, Sonalksis and URS plugins.
  • Engineer & audio supervisor: Dong Open Air 2006 (stereo & 5.1)
    Together with my colleagues David Schwager and Marc Wesemann I mixed a total of 26 tracks of hard’n'heavy metal music in both stereo and 5.1 multichannel for Stephan Liehr’s diploma video project. This gigantic project was realized in Pro Tools HD and some outboard equipment at the University’s own studio in Duesseldorf within the last 1 1/2 years. The final product will be a 3-hour documentary about the metal festival “Dong Open Air” including two hours of live recordings. Andrew Mottl was in charge of mixing the documentary parts and the finishing final mixdown.
  • Engineer: Andy Gillmann (stereo)
    Recording and mixing in studio 1 for the drum school DVD production “Top 10 Grooves & Beats” by Andy Gillmann at the IMM Duesseldorf. Assistant Engineer: Markus Braun. Director: Andrew Mottl. The DVD has been published under the Leu-Verlag.

2007:

  • Assistant engineer, U.F.O. Unidentified Flying Orchestra (stereo)
    The live-session of the German bigband was recorded by Markus Braun at the Loft recording studio in Cologne. A second day was used for additional takes and overdubs. I assisted in setting up the gear and microphones and also operated the Samplitude system. The CD was mixed at Topaz Studios Cologne and has been released on the indie label green deer music as well as iTunes.
  • Engineer, Andy Gillmann Trio, featuring Joe Doll (stereo)
    Second recording session with the jazz trio, this time featuring the German vocalist Joe Doll. Within a couple of hours and very few takes the musicians recorded three songs. The session took place at studio 1 of the Institute for Music and Media Duesseldorf and recording assistant was Andrew Mottl.
  • Producer, Steven Merson – „Clearing my head“(stereo/5.1)
    Producing, recording and mixing 12 tracks of the singer/songwriter Steven Merson as main part my final audio engineering exam. The song “London’s Call” was also produced and mixed in 5.1 multichannel and won the “non-classical surround” category of the recording competition at the 123rd AES Convention in NYC.
  • Engineer, Andy Gillmann Trio (stereo)
    Recording six tracks of jazz standards and new compositions played by the well-known German drummer and his trio. The recording will be used for demo purposes.
  • Engineer, Kare Berik (stereo)
    Live-recording of the German jazz/pop band at a local club. The recording was done with mobile equipment in a team with Andrew Mottl and will be published on the Westjazz sampler at the beginning of 2008.
  • Engineer, Hornstrom (stereo)
    Live-recording of the German jazz quartett at a local club. The recording was done with mobile equipment in a team with Andrew Mottl and will be published on the Westjazz sampler at the beginning of 2008.
  • Engineer, Dziwoki/Leenders/Mottl/Plewe-Quartett (stereo)
    Live-Recording of a local jazz quartett including a live-mix for a tv broadcast.
  • Producer, Corinna Simon – “Yesterday” (stereo)
    Rearranging and producing a triphop version of the famous song by the Beatles.
  • Engineer, Die Apokalyptischen Reiter (stereo/5.1)
    Live-Recording and Surround-Mix of a German heavy-metal band, Live-DVD production.

2006:

  • Assistant Engineer, Walter Trout (stereo)
    Location recording of the blues/rock-guitarist Walter Trout and his band in Esslingen, Germany.
  • Producer, Bossa Boys (stereo)
    Producing, recording and mixing 7 tracks of a German bossa/latin-quartett.
  • Engineer, Student-Project (stereo)
    Recording and mixing two tracks of a student fusion-quintet played in a live studio situation w/out overdubs.

2005:

  • Engineer, Opera-Class of the Music Academy Duesseldorf – “Le nozze di Figaro” (stereo)
    Location-Recording of the opera by Mozart for a DVD Production with a remote truck.
  • Engineer, Sebastian Gahler Trio (stereo)
    Live-recording of the trio feat. Inga Luehning on vocals at the Jazzrally Duesseldorf.
